Dear all,

Sue Wintle and her loyal band of helpers are well advanced in their planning for the Cream Teas on Saturday 29 July. You can drop in at any time between 2.30pm and 4pm for a huge scone (I kid you not; Wagon Wheels may have become smaller over the years, but the Mission Hall scones have been getting larger!), jam and cream, all washed down with copious quantities of tea. The cost is a very reasonable £3.50/person, so treat yourself, family and friends to the enjoyment of another fine old English tradition - a cream tea in the garden, or in the Mission Hall if the weather is inclement. See you there.

Then there's the keenly contested annual Village Vegetable Show. This will take place on Saturday 5 August at - note the venue - the MISSION HALL, under the new stewardship of Jez Cunningham. Starting at 9.30 for competitors to display their wares, members of the public can vote from 10.30 to 11.30. Cost of entry is £3 per person, and this includes a cup of tea or coffee) and a piece of delicious homemade cake.

Undoubtedly all the traditional categories will be in evidence, such  as Longest runner bean; Longest cucumber; Heaviest marrow; Selection of herbs; 3 carrots; 3 tomatoes; Single lettuce; 3 courgettes; 3 beans (any kind); 5 soft fruit (same or mixed); Anything grown in the greenhouse; Any vegetable not already listed; A bunch of flowers; A bunch of different leaves. There will be a nominal charge to enter any number of classes, and proceeds go to charity. The electronic(!) scoreboard will record the result of the famous “spud in a tub” competition for the Des Evans trophy, which is awarded for the heaviest quantity of spuds grown in a tub. No quarter is given in this class, and the competition is fierce! The  prize giving will start at 11.45. Jez, your Master of Ceremonies, should have the answers to any queries (835811 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Following the rigours of the Vegetable Show there be time to relax at the Alfresco Village Lunch, which starts at 1pm the next day, Sunday 6 August. This is also at the Mission Hall, but out in the orchard. On arrival you will receive a welcome drink, followed by a main course and dessert, all for just £13/person. Bring your own bottle of wine, beer, ouzo or whatever is your personal preference and enjoy good food plus good company (for I will be there) in an idyllic setting. Tickets can be obtained from Maureen (835533), and they are selling fast!

Best regards

Chris
