20 June 2025 - Poppy Workshop 2
As discussed at the first workshop, it was agreed to run further sessions for not only those who were unable to previously attend but also to give the volunteers an opportunity to discuss with Rita any questions they might have. A bit like Prime Ministers Question Time. All are welcome and if you can bring any finished poppies Jon can collect them. We look forward to seeing you on Friday July 11th at the Mission Hall 10 am to 1 pm.
You received this email because you paid your Society subs - thank you! Of course you can unsubscribe but we've already spent your money.

Dear friends,
A reminder of the French-themed Summer Picnic, on Sunday 29th June, starting 12.30 in the Mission Hall garden (or inside if the sun-gods let us down). Tickets, £10 per person, are available from Maureen Morris, 835533. So we know the numbers, please get your tickets before next Wednesday, 25th June. BYOB.
Look forward to seeing you there.
Also, thanks to those of you who attended our AGM on Monday, with some interesting discussions.
Best wishes,
Bill Egerton - on behalf of the Mission Hall Committee
14 June 2025 - Annual Vegetable Show (without the vegetables!)
After declining participation last year, the annual Vegetable Show is evolving into a sort of Baking Competition and being combined with a Cream Tea.
This will all happen from 2.30-4.30pm on Saturday 26th July at the Mission Hall.
The competition classes will be limited to just three: Spud-in-a-Tub (competing, as always, for the Des Evans Trophy), a Victoria Sponge, and The Dorset Wigg spiced loaf. Chris Balfe, that (in)famous local baker, has now taught approaching half of the village how to bake bread. He is challenging all-comers (trained or beginners) to bake this amazing spiced bread - the Dorset Wigg. The recipe can be found here and must be adhered to religiously - it's your culinary skills that must shine! All entries to be delivered to the Mission Hall before 2pm please.
The Cream Tea will be £4 and the village breadmakers will also be selling their produce. If you need bread that week, hold off on your purchases and buy some artisan-crafted local delicacies!
All in aid of The Friendly Food Club, teaching Dorset folk some basic cookery skills.

23 May 2025 - Coffee Morning and Raffle in support of Bowel Cancer Research
A follow-up message from Hilary, concerning her Coffee Morning and Raffle today in support of Bowel Cancer Research UK
Dear Friends,I am truly overwhelmed by the incredible support we received at our Coffee Morning and Raffle today! I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone for contributing to this important cause - whether you helped out behind the scenes, baked delicious cakes, donated raffle prizes, or simply came along to share in the day. Your support has truly overwhelmed me.
I had modest hopes to raise a couple of hundred pounds, but thanks to your amazing generosity, we nearly reached £1500! We've rounded it up and it's already on its way to Bowel Cancer Research UK. This success is a testament to the kindness and generosity of our community.
Thank you for showing that when we come together, incredible things happen. I feel so lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive village. Your contributions are making a real difference, and I am forever grateful.
With heartfelt thanks, Hilary
23 May 2025 - Soldiers and Poppies
You may have noticed on VE Day the two Remembrance silhouettes, Tommy and his sister Flora, standing outside the Mission Hall. We bought these from the Royal British Legion to be used in future Remembrance Sunday displays. One of them will be put on the 'village green' in Mission Hall Lane whilst the other will be located at the junction of Sutton Road and Plaisters Lane opposite the phone box.
Now we are asking for volunteers to help create a fitting tribute to the fallen and those still fighting - wherever that may be. One of our villagers has very kindly offered to support a poppy workshop where volunteers will learn to crochet or knit as many poppies as possible which we will attach to a net and hopefully create a display similar to the one below. If we exceed our expectations then we'll make a copy of the Tower of London display.
We have booked the Mission Hall from 10 am -1 pm on Friday June 13th for people to meet up with Rita Oxby to discuss the designs, sizes etc and hopefully create the first of many poppies to be used in the display. If you are interested in attending, or are unable to but are willing to take part, please let Jon waterman know at
Please bring along Poppy Red wool and crochet hooks or knitting needles if you have them. Rita will have a few hooks and needles available, as well as patterns and extra wool.
Thanks for joining the village volunteer team!

19 May 2025 - Sutton Poyntz Jumble Trail
"What's a Jumble Trail?" you ask...
Well, imagine a lot of people all plan to have a Garage Sale in the same village on the same day. Someone makes a map of all of the participating locations, advertises the event, and a lot of people come and buy all the stuff people want to sell. That's exactly what happens in Weymouth (Lodmoor) and in Dorchester (Monmouth Road) - and what Gail has in mind, on a smaller scale, for Sutton Poyntz!
It'll be on July 13th, 10am-2pm, and if you'd like to participate please register with Gail as soon as you can via her email:
Closing date to get on the map will be June 28th, i.e. two weeks before the event.
There'll be a nominal £10 fee to participate which will all be donated to the Mission Hall's next renovation project (the floor!) A limited number of tables will be available in or around the Mission Hall for anyone who has a small number of small objects to sell and perhaps lives a bit out of the way. There will also be tea and cakes available there.
I'm going up to the loft now to get all that stuff ready...
